I think I’m having a business information overload moment. In the last couple days, I’ve read so many thoughts on what entrepreneurs are planning to do differently in their business in this new year, I’ve completely maxxed out. If you believed all these folks, there will be gazillions of people making gazillions of dollars. Yowza.
The thing is that in all this focus on business, very few of these missives have pointed out an obvious thing: business/work is only one part of your life. Most people I talk to outside of the virtual realm (read: in person) don’t just talk about business. They talk about their families, hobbies, vacations, and the fun stuff they like to do.
Work is good, but having a life outside of work is important too. As my father once told me, “you don’t regret the vacations you took; you regret the ones you didn’t take.” (Rather an ironic statement from him, given that he works more than anyone I know, but hey, people can surprise you.)
As noted, we made great strides with our business last year, but as James and I toasted to a great 2007, we decided our new motto is “work less; earn more.” Realistically, a lot of people might be happier if they put aside the endless quest for the almighty dollar and thought about and enjoyed some of the things in life that are far more important than money.
