We’ve been in the midst of the Fall rainy season for what seems like forever. Today the rain looks suspiciously *thick*. In fact, if one were look closely, one might regard it as snow. That would be too disturbing, however.
My feeling is that any year it doesn’t snow on October 10th is a good year. The first year we lived here, that’s the day the snow began. The date is etched into my brain. It was an auspicious beginning to what turned out to be the worst winter in 20+ years. So I’m trying not to look too closely at the weather events transpiring outside my window. Snow in October is just plain wrong, if you ask me.
In more nerdy news, I got a new laptop this week. This event is kind of a big deal for me because I’ve never had a laptop of my very own. For the last few years, when we’ve gone on trips, I’ve taken a 10+ year old hand-me-down laptop to do basic stuff like check e-mail.
I can report that laptop technology has improved dramatically since 1995. In fact, now they don’t even call them laptops. My new silver machine is a "notebook." (And totally cute I might add.) The only thing that’s odd is that it doesn’t come with a PS2 mouse port, so I’m going to have to get a USB adapter to plug in a regular cheapie external mouse. In the meantime, I plugged my old pen tablet into the serial port because I’m completely dysfunctional when it comes to the whole touchpad thing.
For those who don’t know, newer notebooks come with touchpads now. You drag your finger around the pad to point at things and click a button. The trouble is that using it is agonizingly slow. You’d think it might feel similar to a pen tablet, but it’s NOT. It’s slow and makes you feel like you have fat fingers.
I figure that anything that makes you feel fat is best avoided. That goes for poorly designed bathing suits and underwear too, by the way 😉
