This week has been rain-filled and I’ve been battling slugs in my garden. I hate those things. They’re gross. After discovering a huge one engulfing the leaf of a poor unsuspecting basil plant, I realized I had to do something. When I was growing up, my mom would put out pie tins with beer in them. I didn’t have either, so I turned to the Internet for help.
After cruising a number of gardening sites, I learned that you can put in a teaspoon of yeast and some water into a trap to attract the nasty little slugs. (We buy huge bricks of yeast for bread, so it’s something we always have around.) Also, it says to dig the trap into the ground a little so the holes in the trap are even with the ground.
So I took a standard margarine container with a lid and cut three 1/4 high x 2 in long holes in it (so it looks kind of like a gun turret). I left the lid on to prevent evaporation (supposedly it also keeps GOOD critters from falling in accidently). Anyway, it seems to work. Many slugs met their maker this week. Eww.
