This week, like a lot of people, I had to take some time out to get some shopping done. As is so often the case, I found something for me too.
I’m sort of a quiet thrift store addict. Every once in a while, I feel like cruising a few thrift stores and just seeing what’s out there. For very little money, you can sometimes get really cool stuff. (As a bit of a cheapskate, I don’t like to risk big money on my shopping excursions. My husband loves this about me.)
Anyway, on this thrift store run, I found my next refinishing project. It’s a 7-foot tall gun cabinet made out of wood with glass (or plexiglass?) doors. The previous owner took it to Goodwill because he lost the key, so it’s permanently locked. I guess it sat around for quite a while because Goodwill marked it down four or five times. I got it for $39, down from $199.
Vegetarians are generally not hunters and I’m no exception. So my thrift store find is going to have new life as a bookshelf. Here in the woods, dust gets everywhere, including on our books. I’ve wanted one of those "barrister" bookshelves with the glass fronts forever. But, again, I’m way, way too cheap to buy them.
So I’m going to refinish the gun cabinet, remove the rack, and add shelves. Of course, first I have to unscrew the door hinges and take out the lock to get at it. A small detail. It make take a while, but someday my books will live in a lovely dust-free environment.
Oh and if you are wondering, yes I actually did get my shopping done for people too, but hey, I can’t write about that yet.
I hope everyone enjoys a happy and peaceful holiday season, whatever holiday you choose to celebrate ;-).
