This week, I (along with most of the rest of the world) was constantly barraged by variations of the Klez virus. This virus is yet another virus that perpetuates itself by sending garbage e-mail to everyone it finds in the Outlook address book. At least, I know I did not get or spread the virus.
Here’s how I know. As I’ve probably mentioned before, I have my e-mail set to download headers first. I can then examine the headers and decide what I’m going to download (and what I’m NOT going to download). So I saw all the offending e-mails and deleted them on the server before my system could be infected. (Klez creates 150K e-mails, which looked suspicious — my policy is when in doubt, nuke it off the server.) I also have Norton AntiVirus set up to watch for this kind of garbage. Most importantly, I don’t use Microsoft Outlook (or LookOut as it’s referred to around here). So I know that I didn’t perpetuate the virus.
In less nerdy matters, last weekend I got the opportunity to check out my neighbor’s herd of horses. They are by far, the friendliest horses I’ve ever seen. It’s sort of weird…they LIKE being petted and they follow him around like (very big) dogs. In fact, the two-month old baby horse really wasn’t a whole lot larger than my dogs. And he was almost as friendly. Unlike most young horses, he wasn’t skittish and was delighted to have his neck rubbed.
Sometimes living in a rural area has some nifty advantages. Getting the opportunity to pet friendly neighborhood horses is one of them 🙂
