Just Say No to Writer’s Block

This week, I wrote 22 articles, edited 7 web pages and another article, and redid two PowerPoint presentations. (And a partridge in a pear tree.) Yeah, I’m really tired of looking at my computer. Plus, I have a pizza baking even now. I’m hungry, so I’ll be brief.

As I was rolling out pizza dough, I was thinking about how sometimes making the pizza crust just "works." The dough is the perfect consistency and it rolls out just right in just a couple of minutes. Other times, the dough is sticky, gooey, and weird and gloms on to the rolling pin, the cutting board, and me. In short, it’s a huge drag.

It sort of reminds me of writing actually. The only way I can write 22 articles in one week is to write even when my brain is sticky, gooey, and icky. I rarely get writer’s block any more mostly because I have to write so MUCH. So I just start writing and see what happens. Fortunately, with computers, you have your friend the Delete key.

Sometimes entire paragraphs of drek have to go into the digital dumpster. Once you realize the freedom to edit profusely, it’s a lot easier to just start writing. So for me, even with all their annoyances, computers have really freed my creative process. In the days of White Out and carbon paper, I agonized over every word. Now every word is just one keystroke away from oblivion. So when my brain goes into meltdown, I know that the next day, it’s editing time.

But right now, I have a pizza to eat 😉
