This week was filled with meetings and other events that forced me to drive down the hill through the summer heat into town. Some of the events were work related, but some were just plain fun. Like our first sailing lesson on Tuesday night.
After many years of driving by and looking at one of the most beautiful lakes in North America and thinking, "gee we should spend more time on the lake," late last fall we bought a sailboat. It’s a very tiny and sort of old sailboat, but it floats and all the parts work. Sailing aficionados might know what I mean when I say it’s an "AMF Force 5." All I know is that it’s cute and it’s so small we can store it under our front porch during the winter.
In any case, learning to sail the boat has been on our minds for about the last seven months or so. As soon as we saw the notice about sailing lessons from the local Recreation Department, we signed up. Of course, Murphy’s Law being what it is, our first lesson was missing something: wind.
Even without bracing breezes, we still had a good time. We ended up sailing with the folks we bought our boat from (yes, it’s a small town). They’d bought another small sailboat after selling their previous boat to us. So even without wind, we had all kinds of fun floating around the marina and talking about our respective tiny sailboats.
This week, while I’m quietly nerding away during the day, I know I’ll be checking out the lake information and Web cam at http://lpo.dt.navy.mil.
After all, once we get our boat in the water, I’ll want to know when the wind is just right. And who knows, the wind might be so perfect, it might just be necessary to quit work a little early 😉
