This week, I’ve pondered relationships many times. If you think about it, most business relationships have to do with trust (or the lack of it). On Monday, I worried about invoicing a new client in Georgia who I thought might not pay. On Wednesday, I worried about getting a quote ready for a client in Connecticut who said he would fax information to me.
The Georgia client did pay the invoice, so my worries were for naught. However, today there is still no sign of the missing fax from Connecticut, nor a message or e-mail explaining what the problem may be. The mysterious fax has turned into next week’s worry.
Maybe people are just really busy, but it’s gotten to the point where when people say they’ll do something, it’s a *surprise* when they actually do. A couple weeks ago, for example, I was talking to a client in California about how there are no decent avocados to be had in the state of Idaho.
I don’t know what the grocery police do to make avocados so awful by the time they make it here, but in 7 years, I’ve had exactly two edible avocados. When I lived in California, I ate them almost every week. Of course, they are grown in California, so all those transportation problems are less of an issue. In any case, after my sad tale of yucky avocados, my client said, "hey I’ll send you some." (Meanwhile, I’m silently thinking, "yeah sure.")
However, imagine my surprise this morning, when the FedEx man brought me yes, an entire box of avocados. As a result, today I’m feeling somewhat less cynical about life, the universe, and everything.
But there’s still no sign of that stupid fax anywhere 😉
