Any week that has a birthday in it is a good week. Lots of people lament getting older, and although I prefer not to dwell upon that idea, I do think celebrating birthdays is a good thing. The way I see it, a birthday is an opportunity for you and those you care about to essentially celebrate the fact that you exist. It’s the one day of the year that is uniquely yours. It’s not a corporate or religious holiday. It’s just about you. If you ask me, that type of celebration should not include going to work.
With that in mind, we here at Logical Expressions have our own special company policy. No one works on his or her birthday. (Hey, as the president, I figure I should be able to make up a few cool rules.) So thanks to the LEI corporate birthday vacation policy, this week, I got a day off.
As it turned out, even though it’s February, the weather cooperated and my birthday was gloriously sunny. So instead of sitting through a meeting, coding HTML, or doing anything even remotely related to work, I went skiing instead. It was a wonderful ski day. When it’s sunny, the view from the top of Schweitzer Mountain to the lake below is jaw-dropping. Sometimes, you just have to stand there and take it all in.
James has a new tiny "point-and-shoot" digital camera, which he bought just for moments like these. He also has a nice padded case for it, so if he wipes out, he probably won’t destroy the little camera within. (James has a habit of just tipping over when he’s standing still…it’s really pretty funny when you look away for a second and then look back and see his skis in the air.)
In any case, while we manage to stay upright, we can photograph the glorious view for posterity instead of just standing and staring at it. Given the weather around here, it could be another year before we get another ski day as perfect as that one 😉
