Before we moved here, we subscribed to the local newspaper for about 6 months or so. Like many newspapers, the most interesting reading is often on the editorial page. Everybody has an opinion and some people just aren’t afraid to share. Some people share a lot more than others.
One classic letter we read not too long before we moved here was from a fellow who was sick of people speeding. I can’t say I disagree, and the way he phrased it was great. It was many years ago, but it was something along the lines of, "what are you doing going 60 mph? Trying to get to the espresso stand faster?" Anyway, ever since when we’ve been driving around and we see some guy in a BIG all-fired hurry, we figure he’s just "gotta get to that espresso stand."
The letter was essentially making the point that if you moved to North Idaho for the slower pace and better quality of life, why did you bring your stressball big city ways with you? When I see some idiot glued to his cell phone hauling down First Avenue scaring the pedestrians, I wish Sandpoint weren’t quite such a popular destination. As far as I know, since we’ve lived here no one has gotten killed on First Avenue, but I figure it’s only a matter of time.
I mean, folks in Idaho don’t call Highway 95, a "goat trail" for nothing. Like most roads in Idaho, it’s in terrible shape and not holding up well under increased traffic. So if you are in a big hurry to get to the espresso stand, just get over yourself. You’re in Idaho now; if you want to speed, go to California where the roads are built to take it.
