The highlight of this week was, in fact, quite nerdy. We did our first radio show called Computing Onramp, which aired on two local am radio stations (KSPT in Sandpoint and KBFI in Bonner’s Ferry). The show was about broadband Internet connections and was titled "What is broadband and why should you care?" We invited Tom Walton, the President of Pend Oreille Valley Networks (POVN) to be our guest. POVN is a local Internet Service Provider (ISP) up here, so Tom gave us lots of great information about DSL and other broadband options. All in all it was a lot of fun and we’re looking forward to our next show in January.
In less nerdy matters, because of the radio show and other events (like last minute shopping), I’ve had to drive into town a lot this week. Yet again I saw a car being towed off the hill on the way to our house. The fellow from the towing company looked really non-plussed about it. Of course, the road is essentially a sloping sheet of ice, so it’s not really surprising that people are falling off.
One thing I’ve learned living up here is that driver competence makes a difference. When the weather is bad, you often see the big manly "rigs" off to the side of the road along with the tiny sedans. Methinks in these situations that perhaps Joe Stud TruckOwner hath overestimated his driving ability. Speeding, tailgating, and slamming on the brakes just doesn’t work out well on icy roads.
So, everyone, please slow down and be safe this holiday season!
