This morning one of our cats was sitting at the window, intently watching what we call "Birdie TV." The birds have been really active here over the last few weeks. As I mentioned this Spring, I managed to thwart a robin’s endless attempts to nest on our house and garage. However, while I was distracted with that project, a swallow managed to find a crevice on the corner of our house that was apparently large enough to hold a nest.
I discovered the nest when I heard the unmistakable sound of tiny birdies cheeping. Now, I know it’s NOT a good idea to let birds nest on your house, but there is no way I’m going to trash a nest with baby birds in it. I’m not that heartless. Plus, swallows are notable for their ability to consume large quantities of mosquitoes. That scores big points around here.
Yesterday, one of the baby swallows made his big move out of the nest. I looked out the window and there was a tiny swallow on the ground flapping his little wings. He crawled up onto a big rock and was resting. Meanwhile, Momma swallow kept dive bombing him, trying to get him to move off the rock. She even landed on his back a few times. The baby looked really pissed off. But the next time I looked out, he’d moved off the big rock.
A little while later, there was a tremendous amount of swooping around by the swallows in the yard, along with a whole lot of general birdie commotion, so I thought that maybe the birds in the forest were congratulating the new flyer.
More proof that sometimes we all need a kick in the rear to get going. And to be congratulated for our achievements 🙂
