This week I bought new deer whistles for my car. At some point, one of the really cheapie ones I had fell off. (Let’s face it, North Idaho roads are harsh.) The scary thing is that even the really crummy deer whistles seem to be better than nothing. After the whistle fell off, I noticed that the deer I’d see along the side of the road didn’t even look up. When I had the whistles, they at least used to acknowledge my presence. When driving, you really want the deer to know where you are.
A friend of mine once said that there are two types of drivers in North Idaho, "those who have hit a deer and those who haven’t hit a deer yet." I’m happy to say that I fall into the latter category, partly (I hope) thanks to my deer whistles. I mean for a whopping $5.00, I could be saving gazillions of dollars in car repair (not to mention human repair).
I can only assume that this year the hunting is good, since the deer are absolutely everywhere. I’m a vegetarian, so I don’t pay attention to when the various hunting seasons are. (In other words, I don’t eat things that can run away.)
In fact, the other day when I drove into town, I saw four or five deer wandering the roads. That was the day I realized it was SO time to acquire the new deer whistles. Do they work? Maybe. Is it worth $5, even if they only sort of work a little? Definitely.
