Recently, I received the following question from a reader:
"Would tell me how you can change the search engine in IE6.0? I bought a notebook computer and it is set up with their brand of search engine and I do not care for it."
I actually don’t use the Search tool that’s built into Internet Explorer because I think it takes up too much screen real estate (if you click the little X close button in the upper right corner, you can make it go away). Instead, I just type the search engine address directly into the Address line, such as www.yahoo.com, www.google.com or whatever. Then I add the search tool to my Favorites list (just choose Favorites, Add to Favorites). This way, I can just click to get to my favorite search engines and still have the entire window available for the search results.
However, if you do like the Search tool itself, you can change the search engine Internet Explorer goes to by default. Click the Search button, so the Search window appears on the left side. Then click the Customize button. You can then change which search engine Internet Explorer will use. Click Use One Search Service and select the one you like best from the list.
And while we’re on the subject of the Internet, here’s another cool tip I received from a reader. Recently, I answered a question about how to print files. A reader shared an easy way to print files, so I thought I’d pass it on.
This tip only works if you have Outlook (not Outlook Express, but the full-blown Outlook that comes with Microsoft Office). To print files:
1. Open Microsoft Outlook
2. Select View, Outlook Bar
3. Click My Documents
4. Navigate to the folder you want to print
5. Select File, Print
6. As the print style, choose Table.
And voila, Outlook prints a nifty view of all your files and folders.
