Barcode Independence Day

Those of us here in the U.S. had a holiday this week. And many people took a four-day weekend. I hope everyone had a safe and happy Independence Day.

Weeks that have a holiday in them can be a bit confusing. Yesterday felt like a weekend day. We were relaxed. Apparently a little too relaxed. This morning, the first thing I heard was an unprintable expletive as my spouse leaped out of bed. He forgot to set the alarm, so it didn’t go off this morning. At 6:30 a.m. apparently he noticed.

Fortunately (or unfortunately, depending on how you look at it) we don’t oversleep very often. With four dogs nearby, sooner or later, some furry critter is going to wake up and make some disgusting snuffling noise, rattle some ID tags, or perform some other noisy personal maintenance task.

Sometimes when a day starts off wrong, it just doesn’t get much better. I spent a lot of today messing around with databases and Microsoft Word mail merges. I’m doing a mailing and I figured I’d be really high tech and include PostNet bar codes on my labels. The bad news is that after doing the merge, it looked like some of them were getting cut off.

After a bit of research on postnet bar code fonts and time at Microsoft’s site, I discovered that I can’t include barcodes. (As an aside, if anyone needs a sleep aid, I recommend a perusal of the US postal regulations.)

According to the folks at Microsoft, to fit the bar code, I need to have labels that are at least 3 inches wide. They had no workaround other than to use bigger labels. Thanks guys.

Of course, the labels I bought are 2-5/8 inches wide. Bye bye barcodes. The postal service is just going to have to figure out the addresses the old fashioned way. So much for modern technology.
